Save the COMUNITY not the CORPARATION!!!! DEVIANT

Fri Jul 29, 2005, 9:47 PM
Okay, folks. Here's the deal.

By now, you've heard that Scott Jarkoff, aka °jark, is now a FORMER Staff Member.

I'm not privy to the whys, wherefores, and whatever-the-hells are going on behind the scenes here. Don't ask me anything about that. I know probably just as much as you do.

DeviantArt, in my opinion, is becoming less about COMMUNITY and more about CORPORATION.

So what we need to do is bring back THE COMMUNITY.

Here's my suggestion.

On August 7th, DA turns five years old. Five years for a website like this should be a grand affair, one big event.

So don't submit anything on August 7th.

I'm talking a print, a deviation, a scrap...nothing.

Instead, just leave a comment. Visit a user's page and just say hi.

If someone wants to buy a subscription that day, I'm all in favor or it. It'll keep the servers going, and anything that keeps the hamster running is a good thing.

BUT...I think folks shouldn't buy any prints. No print subscriptions. That goes against the COMMUNITY theme for the day.

We want to put the COMMUNITY back into DA.

If you're in favor of this, if you believe in the power this COMMUNITY has, then join me. Post this in your own journal. Spread the word to everyone, with a and a .

We might be touting at windmills like Don Quixote.

But if enough of us do it, we might be able to remind everyone that this is a COMMUNITY first and foremost.

Join me. On August 7th, let's take back DeviantArt.

ekhem... i don't get it. how avoiding submiting, buying options/prints etc. could be anti-community acting? does non-submiting could be more community like than submiting pics? this is wide oriented art site - submiting own pics is as important as commenting others ones. and buying stuff... well, i also see nothing against community in such acts. those are just useful and helpful options, OPTIONS, not essence of dA. community spirit wouldn't be hurt by buying imo.
community is rather case of people, beeing aware of existence other users, making relationship etc. PEOPLE are important, and their attitude to others, not avoiding some options in the one proper day - that leads nowhere. what after anniversary? to keep community spirit would you call to keep non-submiting, non-buying etc? even if those actions would make dA more communiting than in every other day, would you keep that way of communiting longer?

sorry, but i find this idea as... weird and useless. maybe even cute, but still useless. simply convince other people that it's worth to give "hello" to companions, to making your relationship stronger. but such actions, like i said before, leads nowhere, and will change nothing.

anyway i dont think that dA is companion, corporation or other kind of enterprise - for me it is community al the time, because im trying to make community around me, and keep few relationship always in "on mode". it's a mather of attitude, nothing more.

cheers

Listen i dont wanna argue with you, but the essance of any corparation is money and by comuting money you support the corparation. im not saying that having a corparation in deviant art is a bad thing, what im afraid of is that it will BECOME deviant art. if we stop complimenting the Corparation for one day, and show that we can survive as a comunity and not a corparation than we are preventing dev from BECOMING a corparation. and the lack of submissions, are our way of spending a moment of silence for our fallen freind "jark", who is also one of our origianal founders.

well for me is kind of wishful thinking - preventing dA from becoming corporate, as i said before, is a matter of peoples attidtude, not single actions/moments of silence etc (most of them becomes just a mirrage in ppls mind, in fact changing nothing). ppl who don't have will to share community spirit on dA, won't share it after - and those who do it, they don't need that action :). well... anyway, i don't want to argue with you no more either, you know my opinion already.
even so, by accident i will become part of your action - 7.08 i will be far from any kind of civilisation so no submiting would have place ;P

good luck and cheers
